Sources from around the league are reporting that Ron Artest will replace Trevor Ariza as the small forward for the Los Angeles Lakers. This story started gaining interest last night as Artest sent a text saying he'd "be happy to join the Lakers". This move pretty much makes Trevor Ariza bait for another contender after teams saw how pivotal he can be to a championship run. The 24-year-old Ariza is expecting a contract above the mid-level exception set by the league at 5.6 million, a contract which the Lakers were reluctant on offering even after his post-season success.
MY TAKE:
Very smart move by the Lakers. Although Ariza seems to be a building block to a future after Kobe Bryant, why not throw all the chips in and build a multiple championship team? Ariza is an athletic wing who is learning to shoot and has excellent defensive awareness, but Artest is arguably the best on-ball defender in the league. He also can put the ball on the floor and score a few points. Ariza is an unproven player who can develop into a future star, however we all know it's experience and leadership, not untapped potential, that wins championships (Dwight Howard).
